Halogen Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) materials, alternative to PVC, for Cable application

- Context: The replacement of PVC with halogen free flame retardant materials (HFFR) has increased during the last decade because of environmental and safety reasons; such development is counteracted both by the higher costs of the required raw materials and by the greater difficulties in industrial processes due to significant investments of compounding plant and reduction of productivity during the extrusion.
- Objectives: HFFR Low Voltage jacketing compound development, at a low cost and easily processed on conventional PVC equipment used in the cable industry.
- Activities: Defined laboratory formulation and compounding industrialization to found out the cheapest process conditions. These activities have been carried out in cooperation with companies already operating in the cable compounding field.
- Results: HFFR compound industrial production with conventional PVC compounding equipment, as counter-rotating twin screw.
